Grow Centranthus plants in any well-drained soil in full sun. Valerian is a useful plant for coastal positions and will tolerate stony or chalky soils.

Valerian self seeds freely to create large drifts. Where seedlings are not required, cut back the stems as the flowers fade to prevent seeds being set.
