Plant dahlia tubers outdoors in borders and patio containers during april after all risk of frost has passed. Choose a sunny position in moist well drained soil. Prepare the soil by digging in plenty of well rotted manure or compost. Plant tubers at a depth of 60cm (6″) and 60 cm (25″) apart. Water well. Alternatively, start tubers into growth in pots of compost in a frost free greenhouse. Transplant them into their final positions outdoors in June.
Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season. Pinch out the growing tip of each young stem to encourage bushier growth and more flowers. Taller varieties may require staking with garden canes to support their tall stems. Deadhead faded dahlia flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced. With the first autumn frosts, remove tubers from their positions and trim away old stems to 5cm above the tuber. Clean any remaining soil from the tubers and store over winter in peat or sand, in a cool but frost free position. Replant tubers of Dahlia Rebecca’s World the following spring for another spectacular display! Alternatively, if planted in a sheltered well drained position in the border, mulch well around the plant to protect tubers over the winter.
