A stunning semi-evergreen perennial with rich blackcurrant-purple blooms which are produced in abundance throughout summer and early autumn. Perfect for long-lasting colour in cottage garden borders, Penstemon flowers are also attractive to bees. Penstemon plants dislike cold, wet soils in winter. Plant them in a well drained site, adding compost or well rotted manure to amend heavy clay soils. Choose a position in full sun or semi shade.

Feed and water Penstemon plants regularly until they are fully established. Cut back faded Penstemon flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure around the crown of each plant in autumn or spring. Avoid pruning back old foliage until spring arrives, as this will help to protect the plant during winter.
