Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. Plant your hedging at the same soil level as they were growing at the nursery, and water well to settle the soil.

Water regularly until fully established. Blackthorn require little aftercare. Simply remove any diseased, damaged or crossing shoots to maintain a healthy framework. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plants in spring, taking care not to mound mulch up against the stems.
